There is a slim chance I'm alone in this, but growing up, the perfect cup of hot cocoa came from a packet of powder and some hot water. I have a confession to make, I liked it! But that is only because I had never been exposed to anything better, like this homemade recipe.
Making the perfect cup of homemade hot cocoa is quite simple and can be made with healthy ingredients, using substantially less sugar than a store bought version. I prefer to use either almond or coconut milk. If you want an even thicker and creamier cup of cocoa, you can use some canned coconut milk as well. It's a delicious experience!
For the chocolately portion of this recipe, raw cacao is the way to go. Raw cacao has absolutely no sugar in it. Instead, it is loaded with antioxidants and magnesium. And while it is a healthy chocolate, it brings a rich, delectable taste. You won't be disappointed.
The only sugar added is one tablespoon of pure maple syrup per one cup serving. You can adjust that measurement according to your dietary needs and preferences. Another thing that goes well with this hot cocoa is a dollop of coconut whipped cream on top. Enjoy this with your favorite Christmas cookies this holiday season!
1 cup milk of your choice
2 Tbs raw cacao powder
1 Tbs pure maple syrup
1.2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1. In a saucepan, combine all of the ingredients and whisk over medium-high heat until well combined. Continue to whisk occasionally until hot but not boiling.
2. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy. Makes one cup so multiply the recipe as needed.
