Chance are you have heard of acaí berries by now. And quite possibly these superfood berries are already in your daily regimen. But for those of you who are new to the acaí world, here is a little bit of background information on these nutritious berries.
Let's start with the basics. First off, how to properly say acaí. It is pronounced ahh-sah-ee. It's slightly differently than what you would think, right? Acaí berries grow on acaí palm trees in Central and South America. This fruit flourishes is damp environments such as swamps. The Amazon Rainforest has been growing acaí berries for thousands of years and the people from this region have been receiving the health benefits from this superfood berry for quite some time.
Some of the health benefits include the fact that acaí berries contain a high amount of antioxidants. These antioxidants can greatly increase our energy level which will naturally improve our metabolism. The antioxidants are also known as cancer fighters due to the fact that they are five times more potent than gingko biloba. Acaí berries are also a natural cholesterol controller. We can count on this berry to help build our immune system, fight infections, and protect our heart. From a beauty standpoint, the oils in these berries help to rejuvenate skin cells and fight wrinkles. What! Give me more!!! The fiber content aids in healthy digestion, bringing balance to our body, and helps eliminate toxins. So perhaps that helps explain why this little purple berry is known as a superfruit.
At this point, you may be wondering where to get your hands on some acaí. Acaí comes in a few different forms. You can purchase it in a pureé, a powder, and a juice form as well as through supplements. One of the best known companies for purchasing acaí is Sambazon. Their products are organic and non-GMO so you can have confidence in that. For my acaí bowls, I prefer to use these unsweetened pureé packs for this recipe. You can find Sambazon products at Whole Foods, New Seasons, Costco (on occasion), and most local health food stores.
As far as toppings go, there are many options and all depends on your preference. Some suggestions are: unsweetened coconut, various raw nuts and seeds, unsweetened dried fruit, organic fresh fruit, granola, raw cacao nibs, and the list goes on. I use homemade almond milk when blending all the ingredients, but coconut milk or another milk option would work too. I also used organic spinach but organic kale works well in you prefer. You can also add your favorite protein powder, nut butter, or some avocado for extra goodness.
1 packet frozen organic acaí pureé
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup organic frozen blueberries
1 1/2 cup packed organic spinach
1/2 cup milk of choice, I used homemade almond milk
1 Tbs chia, flax, or hemp seeds
1 tsp fresh ginger
approximately 1 cup of ice, depending on desired thickness
Toppings- fruit, nuts, seeds, cacao nibs, coconut, etc.
1. Add all of your ingredients (excluding the toppings) into your high speed blender and blend until smooth. Start with 1/2 cup of ice and gradually add more if you find it needs to be thicker. Alternatively, you can add more milk if you want to thin it out.
2. Pour into a bowl and garnish with your favorite toppings. Some of my favorites are fresh organic blueberries, fresh organic raspberries, raw pumpkin seeds, raw slivered almonds, and unsweetened coconut.
3. Enjoy immediately :)
