If you have been keeping up with me lately, you may recall my story of our new Betta fish, Charlie. In case you missed his introduction, check out my Sweet Potato Sushi Bowl recipe to get the scoop. First, let me put you at ease and let you know Charlie is a lot happier and healthier than the first time I wrote about him. Yay! We have learned a lot about caring for Betta fish and I'm not going to lie, at first it seemed like nothing I wanted a part of. But now Charlie is a member of the family and my attitude has shifted quite a bit.
So I know this sounds crazy, but Charlie is super smart! I feel like he is communicating with us. For example, a few nights ago, my husband told Charlie to touch the surface of the water with his nose. Guess what? He did! Then he looked right at my husband as if he was seeking praise or approval. My son witnessed the whole thing! So yesterday I tried the same thing. I wish I would have been taking a video of this, but he touched the surface on command for me as well. Then he looked right at me as if he was waiting for his treat. Most of our friends think we are crazy when we tell them the things Charlie is doing. It's understandable. I never thought fish could be obedient or have this much personality.
Of course this behavior has peeked my curiosity and I did a small amount of research on Betta fish. It turns out they are intelligent! They learn to recognize their owners and perform tricks! Who would have thought? I guess that means we have some fish training to do! I have been keeping one of my good friends informed with the latest Chronicles of Charlie, and she pointed out something interesting to me. I was resistant to Charlie when he first came home and really just did not want him as a pet. Like most everyone, I just don't have the time, and what time I do have, I wasn't willing to give it to a fish. But now that I see how my son interacts with his first pet, and the fun personality Charlie has, I am more on board with it all and am actually enjoying having him in our home. I'm still not fond of cleaning the aquarium on a weekly basis, but I'm sure I will get better at it as time goes on.
It made me think though, about what my friend said, and I wondered about the times I was convinced that something would be a bad thing, or maybe not interesting to me, and I wouldn't even consider trying it. Then I turned out to be wrong. Sometimes we let our own stubbornness get in the way of experiencing something really cool. Accepting Charlie has reminded me to carefully examine something before I completely shut it out. Looking at things through different lenses can perhaps make a difference in my thought process and decisions. I don't want to miss a good thing, you know? Do you have any funny pet stories or other situations in life that completely surprised you? I would love to hear from you!
Meantime, I want to share with you a delicious smoothie bowl that bursts with flavorful in season blueberries. Using a variety of berries in this bowl loads you with some beneficial antioxidants while the nuts and seeds give you ample protein. The grass-fed gelatin is optional, but it provides a nice protein boost as well. If you are vegan, omit it. You can always increase the chia seeds or add another variety of nuts and seeds to your toppings. There are plenty of options and as always, no rules here! Anything goes.
I like my smoothie bowls extra thick. But if you prefer a thinner consistency, gradually add more milk while blending until your desired thickness is reached. I love the addition of some Sweet Cashew Cream to my smoothie bowls. It seriously tastes like dessert for breakfast! Not to mention more protein from the cashews. Give it a try!
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 frozen banana (can sub 1 cup of ice and 3 dates)
2 Tbs grass-fed gelatin
1 Tbs chia seeds
unsweetened coconut flakes
seeds (hemp, flax, sunflower, pumpkin)
1. Place all smoothie ingredients into your high speed blender and blend until thick and smooth. Use your tamper to get things evenly blended. The mixture will be thick.
2. Pour into your bowl and top with your favorite ingredients. Enjoy immediately! Makes one large bowl.
